Terms of Use

Ananda · Also serving as the End User Licence Agreement · Last updated 12 October 2026

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the Ananda mobile application ("Ananda", "the app"), published by Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan, Bangalore, India ("we", "us", "our"). By downloading or using Ananda, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree to them, do not use the app.

1. What Ananda is

Ananda is a practice companion for Hindustani classical music. It provides recorded accompaniment instruments — tanpura, tabla, swarmandal and manjira — together with a chromatic tuner that displays pitch as swars, and the ability to record your own practice sessions locally on your device.

Ananda is a practice tool. It is not a teacher, an examiner, or a substitute for instruction from a qualified guru, and nothing it displays should be treated as authoritative musical instruction.

2. Licence to use the app

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Ananda on devices you own or control, for your own personal and non-commercial practice.

Your licence to use the app is also governed by the End User Licence Agreement supplied with it and by the usage rules of the app store you downloaded it from. Where the End User Licence Agreement and these Terms differ on the scope of the licence, the End User Licence Agreement prevails.

3. What you may not do

You agree not to:

  • copy, modify, translate, or create derivative works of the app;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app, or attempt to derive its source code, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by applicable law;
  • extract, separate, redistribute, resell, license, or otherwise make available the audio recordings or sample content contained in the app, whether on their own or as part of another product;
  • rent, lease, lend, sell, or sublicense the app;
  • remove or obscure any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notice in the app; or
  • use the app in any way that breaches applicable law, or the usage rules of the app store you obtained it from.

Using the app's output as accompaniment in your own performance, teaching, practice, or recording is permitted and expected. Extracting the underlying samples for use outside the app is not.

4. Your recordings

Ananda allows you to record your practice sessions. Those recordings are created by you, belong to you, and are stored locally on your device. We do not collect them, have no access to them, and claim no rights in them.

Because recordings are stored only on your device, you are responsible for backing up anything you wish to keep. Deleting the app, losing the device, or a device fault may result in the permanent loss of recordings. We are not able to recover them.

5. Purchases

Ananda may offer one or more in-app purchases that unlock additional features. All purchases are processed by the app store you downloaded the app from — Google Play or the Apple App Store — and not by us. We do not receive or hold your payment details.

Refunds, restorations, and billing disputes are handled under the policies of that store. If you believe you are entitled to a refund, you should contact the store directly. We can help with technical problems that prevent a purchase from unlocking, but we cannot process a refund ourselves.

A purchase is tied to the store account used to make it. Purchases made on Google Play do not carry over to the Apple App Store, or the reverse, because the two stores bill separately.

6. Privacy

Ananda does not collect, store, transmit, or share personal information. There is no account and no registration. Our Privacy Policy explains this in full and is available at anandamusic.app/privacy. It forms part of these Terms.

7. Microphone

The tuner requires access to your device's microphone. Audio captured for tuning is processed on your device in real time and is not stored or transmitted. You may decline or withdraw microphone permission at any time in your device settings; the tuner will not function without it, but the rest of the app will continue to work.

8. Changes to the app

We may update, change, or discontinue features of Ananda, and may release new versions from time to time. We may stop supporting older versions of the app or older operating system versions. Where a change removes a feature you have paid to unlock, we will say so in the release notes.

9. Intellectual property

The app, its audio recordings, its interface, the name "Ananda", and its logo are owned by Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. These Terms grant you a licence to use the app; they do not transfer any ownership to you.

Raags, taals, and the traditions of Hindustani classical music are not owned by anyone. The particular recordings and arrangements contained in this app are.

10. App store terms

This agreement is between you and us, not with Apple Inc. or Google LLC. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for the app and its content, and for any claim relating to it — including product liability, any failure to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection or privacy law. We are also responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging any claim that the app infringes a third party's intellectual property rights.

We alone provide maintenance and support for the app. Apple and Google have no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance or support services for it.

If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, to you. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple will have no other warranty obligation whatsoever in respect of the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty will be our sole responsibility. Where you obtained the app through Google Play, refunds follow Google Play's refund policy.

You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app, such as the terms of your mobile data plan. You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, upon your acceptance of them, have the right to enforce them against you. Where you obtained the app through Google Play, the same applies to Google LLC and its subsidiaries.

This agreement may not provide for usage rules that conflict with the App Store Terms of Service or Google Play Terms of Service in force when you entered into it, and you acknowledge you had the opportunity to review those terms.

11. Disclaimer

Ananda is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of inaccuracies, or that pitch detection will be accurate in every acoustic environment. Tuner readings depend on the quality of your device's microphone and the noise around you, and should be treated as a guide rather than a measurement instrument.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any right you have under consumer protection law that cannot be excluded or limited by agreement.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for loss of data, loss of recordings, or loss of profits, arising out of or in connection with your use of the app.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total liability to you in connection with the app is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or, if you paid nothing, to a sum of one thousand Indian rupees.

13. Termination

These Terms apply for as long as you use the app. You may end them at any time by deleting Ananda from your devices. We may suspend or end your licence if you materially breach these Terms, in particular the restrictions in section 3.

Sections 9 to 11 survive the end of these Terms.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts at Bangalore, Karnataka, shall have jurisdiction, except where the law of your country of residence gives you the right to bring proceedings in your local courts, in which case that right is unaffected.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this document and publish the revised version on our website. Continuing to use the app after a revision takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not accept them, you should stop using the app.
